In 1960, Laurance Rockefeller
visited the Big Island to scout beachfront sites for a new
resort. “As he flew over the white sand crescent of
Kauna’oa Beach, Mr. Rockefeller asked if he could go for a
swim. From the water he looked upslope at the towering
summit of Mauna Kea and was inspired to create a great hotel
that reflected the spirit of this special place.” When
it opened in 1965, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was the most
expensive hotel ever built in the islands. After an
unprecedented $150 million renovation, the Mauna Kea
Beach Hotel reopened in December 2008.
The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has
been rated “America’s #1 Favorite Resort in Hawaii” three
years in a row in an independent national poll of 15,000
U.S. CEOs and corporate presidents.
